When Should You Start Shopping for Your Wedding Dress?

A practical overview of ordering windows, alterations, and shorter-timeline options.

Editorial note: This article provides general bridal guidance. Modern Affinity is not currently accepting appointments or gown orders.

Many brides begin nine to twelve months before the wedding, but the right starting point depends on the type of gown, production schedule, alteration needs, and your own decision-making style.

Made-to-order gowns

Designer production timelines can require several months, followed by shipping, quality checks, and alterations. Starting earlier generally creates more flexibility.

Alterations matter

Allow meaningful time for fittings, structural changes, hemming, bustling, and final adjustments. The most beautiful gown still needs time to become yours.

Working with a shorter timeline

Off-the-rack, sample, resale, or ready-to-ship options may be more practical when the wedding date is closer. Availability and condition should be evaluated carefully.
